PricewaterhouseCoopers wins prestigious Global Award for its gender diversity work and achievements

London, 30 APR 2009 – PricewaterhouseCoopers has been named winner of the ‘Global award’ at the Opportunity Now Awards Dinner 2009, held yesterday evening in London, UK. The award, which recognises an outstanding diversity programme that extends across at least three countries, is in acknowledgement of the work and achievements of PwC’s global Gender Advisory Council (GAC), an international group of 14 senior male and female leaders from around the world who actively work to improve the representation of PwC women in the workplace.

Opportunity Now is a membership organisation for employers who are committed to creating an inclusive workplace for women. This is the first time a ‘Global award’ category has been included in its annual awards programme.

Moira Elms, Global Partner for People, Knowledge, Brand and Communications and chair of the Gender Advisory Council, says: “We are extremely proud of this distinction. At PwC, we are committed to ensuring women have the opportunity to build a rewarding career and move into leadership positions. Since its foundation in 2006, the Gender Advisory Council has made a real impact. Every year, we see an increase in the number of female partners around the world. And we now have two talented women on the global leadership team.”

Cleo Thompson, Gender Advisory Council Programme Manager, who, with Moira Elms, accepted the award on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers, adds: “I am delighted we have won this award, particularly since Opportunity Now is such a respected and prestigious organisation and one of the few bodies to recognise achievement in global diversity.”

Sponsored by PwC’s Global CEO, the GAC provides a one-stop shop to assist PwC firms around the world with opportunities for global collaboration. Initiatives include:

  • the development of a toolkit aimed at assisting PwC people around the world in creating and sustaining networks for women
  • the publication of a report on women in leadership, “The Leaking Pipeline”, which examines 79 women from 7 countries and looks at their stepping stones to success
  • the creation of an external gender diversity website and blog, The Gender Agenda, rated number three in Google’s chart of blogs on gender
  • the production of a global thought leadership film, “Closing the Gender Gap”, which looks at the world in 2050 and how a focus on gender diversity can increase productivity and deliver business benefits
