Global trends for Paying Taxes since 2004

The trends for the Paying Taxes indicators over an eight-year period have shown a consistent reduction in the average tax burden on business across the three Paying Taxes indicators.

In the eight years since the study began, the time to comply has fallen by 54 hours—almost seven working days—and the number of payments has declined by more than six, while the Total Tax Rate has fallen nearly 1 per cent for each year. These encouraging trends have been driven by a total of nearly 300 reforms initiated around the world over the study period.

The charts below show the trends for each indicator across both time and region.

Global and regional trends

Note: These averages are calculated only for those economies that have been included in all eight years of the study (174 economies) to ensure that we represent a true trend. The values shown here for calendar year 2011 therefore differ slightly from the averages shown earlier, which represent the 185 economies included in the most recent study.
