How do customers behave differently when purchasing in different retail sectors?

Highlights from our survey findings about shopping habits in the sports equipment and outdoor sector

  • Of those who purchased from an out of country online retailer, 21% said they’d be likely to purchase sports equipment and outdoor items. Shoppers from Turkey expressed most interest in purchasing out of country, at 32%. 
  • 43% of sports equipment shoppers preferred to research their purchases online, while 30% said they’d rather do it in store.     
  • 46% preferred to make these purchases in store, while just 32% preferred to do it online (21% via PC and 5% each via tablet or phone).     
  • 20% didn’t do any research before purchasing in this category – one of the sectors where shoppers were least likely to do research.    
  • 61% of shoppers in this category made at least some of their purchases online in the last year. Leading the way, India shoppers (72%) said they had made at least some of these purchases online. 
  • 26% of the global sample said they had not purchased online in this category in the last 12 months. 44% of South Africa respondents had not purchased online during the year, the highest percentage.
