Hong Kong team wins PwC-sponsored Retail Futures Challenge
World Retail Congress
September 26-27, 2011

The Retail Futures Challenge, a highlight of the World Retail Congress agenda, was sponsored again in 2011 by PwC. The competition is designed to support and develop upcoming retail. Seven international colleges competed – first locally and then the winning teams in finals at the Congress – creating an entry strategy for a retail brand from their own country for Germany's KaDeWe department store.

This year's event included teams from Fashion Institute of Technology, New York; Fashion Retail Academy, London; Hong Kong Polytechnic University; IULM University (Libera Università di Lingue Comunicazione), Milan; Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Melbourne; The Welingkar Institute of Management, Mumbai; and Rikkyo University, Tokyo. Carrie Yu, PwC Hong Kong/China partner, participated on the judging panel in Hong Kong and PwC-India partners Rachna Nath and Sachin Khurana were part of the judging panel at Welingkar Institute (Mumbai). PwC partner Gerd Bovensiepen acted as a judge at the final presentations at the Congress, where Hong Kong Polytechnic University's retail entry strategy for Blanc de Chine was the winner. Blanc de Chine is luxury fashion brand that takes inspiration from Chinese culture and philosophies.

In conjunction with the event, PwC-Germany hosted a private dinner for clients and targets at the Berlin Capital Club, as well as a special cocktail reception attended by 100 Congress delegates and the student teams.

Lease Accounting Proposals - PwC Workshop for Retailers

The accounting proposals of the IASB and FASB will have a highly significant impact on a retailers' financial statements if they are adopted as currently proposed. The goal of the workshop is to discuss the proposals, share opinions and develop alternative proposals where appropriate. The meeting will be facilitated by David Mason, Chairman of PwC's Retail and Consumer Industry Accounting Group, and Peter Hogarth, Partner, and Marian Lovelace, Director, from our Accounting Consulting Services team in the UK. The agenda will consist of setting the scene, summarising the proposals, working through various questions put forward by the two boards, focussing on the lessee implications, and discussing possible responses. We will close by gathering some thoughts on possible contents of a covering letter.

Fashion Institute of Technology and World Retail Congress CEO Breakfast

Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) student teams are participating in Retail Futures Challenge 2010. Their task is to develop a retail concept that epitomizes their home city - New York. Finalist student teams from FIT will be will presenting their concepts for "Store New York" in front of retail executives at the breakfast. The winning team will compete with other colleges in the finals at the World Retail Congress in Berlin.
