Why is interoperability so important and how can open systems can benefit healthcare stakeholders?

Interoperability, by definition, is the ability to create end-to-end solutions by interconnecting components and systems from multiple vendors forming a network. It is a critical step in supporting the broad commercial adoption of mobile health (mHealth). However, the adoption of interoperability standards has been inconsistent due to the entrenched business interests of vendors offering closed end-to-end solutions.

In this issue, we explore:

  • The current state of interoperable systems and how it is evolving;
  • Why interoperability is so important to the widespread adoption of mHealth, and
  • How open systems can benefit providers, payers and new device entrants.
