The Conference was honoured to be addressed at lunch by Linda Coady, VP Sustainability for the 2010 Winter Olympics, which will be held in Vancouver/Whistler. She told delegates that the commitment to sustainability was not just talk. It was enshrined in the bid for the games, driven by local citizen expectations and requirements, aligned with BC and Canada’s policy priorities and aligned with Olympic trends and priorities. Although Linda admitted it is difficult to add sustainable components to a long, concrete luge sliding track, VANOC’s objectives for all aspects of the Winter games include designing for less and using existing facilities; reducing ecological footprints of the venues; building green buildings, to LEED Silver or better; and building communities that will be used by citizens long after the Games have left. Beyond the bricks and mortar, the operating aspects of the games also focus on human and natural capital, including Aboriginal youth and sport, Inner City youth and training, accessibility, volunteers and carbon and waste footprint.
