In the fifth edition of this annual study, it is remarkable to find that the total value of European financial services (FS) M&A deals has increased yet again. Although this expansion was unquestionably boosted by one exceptional transaction, there were many other factors driving growth in deal activity during the year.

In this study we aim to identify some of the key themes at work in European FS M&A in 2007 and, at a time when the industry is facing unprecedented uncertainty, to offer some predictions for the coming year.
