The road to Copenhagen
In December, world leaders gather in Copenhagen to establish a successor agreement to the Kyoto Protocol—the international treaty that first established targets for the reduction of greenhouse gases. If a consensus is reached in Copenhagen to cut the world's emission of greenhouse gases even more substantially, governments around the world will be obliged to adopt policies that encourage a “greening” of their respective energy systems.
In turn, these policy changes will have a profound effect on the operations and economics of energy suppliers and large energy consumers around the world. In short, one way or another, many businesses have a direct stake in the outcome of the Copenhagen conference. That’s why PwC has built a website called,
The road to Copenhagen. The website contains a host of briefings and analysis that provide context for the Copenhagen conference and cover many of the issues to be discussed there.
The success of the Copenhagen conference is, however, far from certain. That’s why WWF, the world’s leading conservation organisation, is sponsoring an initiative called,
Vote Earth. By registering at the Vote Earth website and casting a vote for earth, millions of people can send a powerful message to the delegates attending the Copenhagen conference that they want further cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. PwC firms around the world have agreed to raise awareness of Vote Earth among members of their respective workforces. Through Vote Earth, PwC people will have the opportunity to engage in one of the most important issues of our time and underscore our organisation’s commitment to the environment.
