Interview with Andrew Brandler

Chief Executive OfficerCLP Holdings Ltd.

"Although the world’s economy is recovering, I think that we are going to see growth at a lower level than the long term global trend over the next two or three years."

"We are going to focus our allocation of capital more tightly in the markets where we feel we have a competitive advantage and in particular segments within those markets."

"The three major threats that we face are regulation, regulation and regulation. ...It’s absolutely clear that government regulations are getting tighter across all the areas where we operate."

"I think the environment is a big issue for us globally whether it is about conventional emissions, which is about air quality, or climate change, which is to do with carbon emissions."

"I’ve been chief executive for CLP for more than ten years and I would say the management structure, the management capabilities are quite dramatically different now than they were 10 years ago."

"We’ve known for a long time, having a franchise from society as it were, that the license to operate from our customers in particular and then governments that regulate what we do, is vitally important."

"In terms of the importance of our different stakeholders, our customers are absolutely the most important. If we don’t give them a good service – affordable tariffs, high reliability, good customer service – then we know we are going to be in trouble."

"We’ve been in business 100 years and we want to be in business for another 100 years, and in order to do that we have to have regard for legitimate concerns that our stakeholders have and that we have as management about the long term risks that we face."

"We integrate our financial reports with our sustainability reports now and we report to all our stakeholders about what we are up to. We are very transparent on the goals that we set and how we are progressing vis-à-vis those goals"
