The Government is focusing on opening up the share capital of companies involved in the sugar sector. There are two main measures that should help planters and workers invest in companies involved in all the sugar activities, including value added sugar, energy and ethanol:
- Loan to planters and workers that will be repaid out of future dividends
- One-off grant to small planters and employees to invest in the sector.
Emphasis is put on the potential increase in revenue support from the EU to compensate for the drop in sugar prices (36% in total by 2009).
