Case Study: Insurance Claims- The Canberra Bushfires

Our role

We were appointed to investigate the standing timber loss and to assist ACT Insurance Authority (ACTIA) to calculate the losses suffered by 12 ACT government agencies (including Housing, Environment and Health) under their Industrial Special Risks policy (including property damage and business interruption) following the Canberra bushfires in January 2003.

The outcome

By using our expertise in managing the various losses and preparing the claims on their behalf, ACTIA senior management were free to continue running the business, while ensuring their principal losses were being progressed to the satisfaction of all ACT government bodies. To date, the standing timber claim and many of the agency ISR claims have been settled, with total recoveries expected to exceed $100 million.
