Our main functions include validation, applying for registration, verification and certification of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and voluntary project activities for greenhouse gas emission reduction projects. Carbon credits termed Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) for the CDM market and Verified Emission Reductions or Voluntary Carbon Units (VERs/VCUs) for the voluntary market are then available for trading on the open market as a commodity. The process of validation and verification for CDM projects is explained in the flow diagram.
PwC Service Offering
Validation is an assessment of the project design document of a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) or voluntary emission reduction project before it becomes operative. It shall ensure that the project will fulfil the CDM requirements and generate tradable credits. As DOE we then apply to have the project registered with the UNFCCC or the other voluntary carbon entities.
Verification and certification takes place after a CDM or voluntary project is implemented. Verification is a periodic review to determine actual emission reductions generated in addition to verifying continued compliance with the criteria defined under the Kyoto Protocol or the voluntary protocols.
For further informationon the validation process please visit the CDM website.
Project Validation, Verification and Certification
A Designated Operational Entity is also responsible for maintaining a publicly available list of all PricewaterhouseCoopers CDM project activities for which it has carried out validation, verification or certification. To this end, all relevant documentation is made publicly available on the projects page, and the site allows members of the public to submit comments on these projects.
