Electronic Evidence

Computer systems and other electronic devices are an important source of evidence in many disputes including fraud, employment law and other litigation issues. Electronic evidence should be forensically copied quickly, in its entirety using accepted forensic methodologies and equipment that will be admissible in courts. Unfortunately, most in-house IT personnel do not have the expertise, training, investigative techniques or the resources to undertake such evidence recovery procedures.

We are one of the few organisations in New Zealand outside law enforcement to offer a thorough computer forensic service. Our skill in this area has on many occasions located valuable evidence from computer systems which were previously believed to be clean. Our software and methodologies aim to gather evidence quickly, completely, and in a legally admissible manner.

How we can help you

Our team has extensive experience with the requirements of government clients – including the execution of police search warrants and civil Anton Piller orders. Our software and procedures are thorough and flexible, and provide evidence in a legally admissible format.

The forensic process includes the identification, securing, preservation, copying, analysing, reporting and delivery of expert witness services for items including computer systems, network data, digital cameras, cell phones, and other hand held devices.

Our methodology will vary depending upon the unique characteristics of each matter. However, we will usually:

  • Assess the electronic environment
  • Acquire the forensic image or capture critical data using alternative methodologies
  • Analyse the forensic image and/or reconstruct the target computer system
  • Preparation of a report. If required, this service also includes providing professional expert evidence in court proceedings
PricewaterhouseCoopers’ computer forensics experts are trained and experienced to establish the security of computer data, while maintaining its evidentiary value and chain-of-custody to allow its admissibility in court.
