Creating a climate of innovation: The healthcare industry's biggest challenges

The United States faces another political season, and, likely, a volatile debate about what can be done to improve the current health system. Everyone agrees that the current path is not sustainable, and is fracturing around access, affordability and quality. Failure is not inevitable; in our global research report, HealthCast 2020: Creating a sustainable health system, PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Health Research Institute identified "Climate of Innovation" as one of the key features needed for sustainability. Innovation is a crucial means to continuously improve treatment, efficiency and outcomes. But wide-scale innovation — which requires diverse players within the industry to collaborate — is difficult to achieve. In this Straight Talk roundtable, healthcare industry leaders talk about what they’re doing to nurture innovation. This session was held at Modern Healthcare's Chicago headquarters on September 26, 2007. Charles Lauer, columnist and consultant to Modern Healthcare, was the moderator.

Roundtable participants included:
  • David Chin, M.D., partner and leader of the Health Research Institute, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Boston.
  • Alice Rosenblatt, executive vice president of integration, information management, and chief actuary, WellPoint Inc., Thousand Oaks, Calif.
  • Greg Simon, president, FasterCures/The Center for Accelerating Medical Solutions, Washington.
