The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, revealed how vulnerable America's open, industrialised society has become. An individual or group can wield tremendous destructive power by taking control of the resources companies use to run their business.
The list of potentially vulnerable targets includes nuclear reactors, chemical plants and storage facilities, electrical grids, ground transportation equipment, and a host of other industrial assets. Effective protection of these assets requires more than physical security measures. Information systems control the functioning of equipment and processes at many industrial facilities. Thus, gaps in IT security are a potential avenue of attack by terrorists or others bent on mayhem.
