By almost any measure, emerging markets have become critical shapers of the global economy. They are driving global growth more than ever before: During 2006 the combined output of emerging economies exceeded that of the developed nations for the first time (on a purchasing-power basis). Indeed, emerging economies have increasing worldwide influence, not only through the provision of labour, goods and services but also through foreign investment and consumer markets.
