Transparent IT spending & performance in healthcare

This paper addresses the healthcare IT professional's need for a way to ensure that technology is aligned with business objectives, that the organisation is maximising its IT ROI, and that there is appropriate visibility and transparency in place with regard to IT costs. The authors propose a new solution, one that is simple, yet also radical. Their premise is that to maximise the full potential of IT investments, the IT function must be managed as a stand-alone business unit.

The paper outlines seven key components for managing IT as a business, including the need to:
  1. Understand the real IT spend
  2. Standardise and leverage IT investment cycles
  3. Measure performance with a focus on outcomes, not processes
  4. Link IT strategy with business/clinical strategy
  5. Create and institutionalise a patient/physician-focused culture
  6. Prioritise and establish direct accountability
  7. Report continuously
