Australia dominated regional utility deals activity in 2006, accounting for 43 per cent of all power deal values in the Asia Pacific region.
Total deal value involving Australian bidders and targets more than doubled to US$20.7billion up from US$9.2billion in 2005. Globally, deal values broke all records in the electricity and gas utilities sector over the past year. Total deal values beat the US$196billion record level set in 2005 to reach US$298.8billion in 2006. This is more than six times the US$43billion level of transactions recorded in the sector just three years ago.
For the first time since 2003 Australia has had a deal amongst the top ten global deals with two of the three Alinta and AGL transactions featuring at number seven and ten. The number of Australian transactions in the top 100 global deals continues to climb with 10 making the cut in 2006 - up from 7 in 2005 and 6 in 2004.
