Part 3: India ’s booming middle class, manufacturing clout and nascent research base could prove a very tempting prospect for Western pharmaceutical firms

India’s population is growing rapidly, as is its economy – creating a large middle class with the cash to afford Western medicines. It also has the world’s second biggest pool of English speakers and a strong system of higher education. In addition to these socio-economic advantages, it can call on considerable manufacturing expertise; some of the leading local producers have now started conducting original research; and the new patent law should provide better protection of intellectual rights. In short, India’s attractions are rapidly increasing, and it could eventually become one of the world’s most significant markets.
