Towards the end of last year PwC completed a survey of foreign banks in Australia, featuring the views of senior executives in 32 of the 33 licensed foreign banks on the future of their organisation in Australia.
It is an intriguing time in the Australian banking industry, with the foreign banks contributing to an unprecedented level of competition. While the local banks have proved themselves capable of maintaining impressive growth and profits, many of the foreign banks operating in Australia have significant growth aspirations, which will undoubtedly change the industry landscape.
This survey highlights some interesting points that will continue to be relevant in 2006; for example, where the foreign banks are looking for growth, how they aim to target specific niches, and how they are deploying technology as a driver of change.
