Technology executive connections, Vol. 3 -- Successful strategies for talent management

The battle for brains. Talent is the world's most sought-after commodity and the competition is amongst the fiercest in the technology industries which face a looming talent shortage. Technology executives must take steps to deal with it.

Successful Strategies for Talent Management, is the third volume in Technology Executive Connections series (see side bar). It explores the increasing competition for talent and how leading technology companies around the world are responding to this challenge.

Based on 150 online surveys supplemented with 22 interviews with companies such as Dell, Microsoft, Yahoo!, IBM and Cisco, the report features four main observations on talent management. PwC subject matter expertise flows through the analysis.

Observation one: Technology executives are making talent management a greater priority, but do not have a high regard for their firms' current HR capabilities.

Observation two: There's a painful scarcity for the essential employee: that technically-savvy individual who can collaborate, innovate and manage change.

Observation three: Technology companies worldwide are renewing focus on retention through development and training.

Observation four: Many technology companies are having difficulty finding talent in emerging markets including retaining skilled people worldwide.
