The issue
This company recognised that it may have a significant liability arising from the amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated by its business. The board of directors wanted to set a target to reduce emissions, but didn’t have the data to accomplish this task.
Our approach
PricewaterhouseCoopers sustainability solutions helped the client establish the existing level of emissions and evaluated a number of options for action. PricewaterhouseCoopers:
- Looked at a sample of business units;
- Discussed potential emissions reduction actions with local management; and
- Prepared cost abatement curves showing the investment required to achieve various targets.
The results were then extrapolated for the group as a whole.
The outcome
The advice given helped the board finalise its climate change strategy. By gaining an understanding of existing emissions levels and evaluating options to reduce emissions, they were able to set realistic future targets for emissions reductions and communicate these to their stakeholders.
