Case study: Administrative burden of Dutch Health insurers

The issue

Dutch public health insurers faced a considerable administrative burden. Various government institutions required the insurers to report different types of information, at different times of the year, often in different formats. Separately, a rising public demand for increased transparency was putting additional pressure on the insurers. The Association of Dutch Health Insurers looked for a partner who could assist them in streamlining and tailoring the administrative and public requirements in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders. The aim of the project was to develop an efficient reporting model which, at the same time, included all information required by stakeholders.

Our approach

A PricewaterhouseCoopers team with expertise in both accounting and sustainability-related reporting organised a multi-disciplinary taskforce comprising all relevant parties from the healthcare industry and the responsible government bodies. PricewaterhouseCoopers’ tasks included leading the debate during project group and steering committee meetings as well as encouraging other relevant stakeholders to participate in the process.

The outcome

From this effort, an information model was developed which both increased the transparency of the insurers’ public reporting while eliminating redundant reporting streams. The information model will be adjusted on a yearly basis.
