Toronto, 19 SEPT 2007 — In the first decade of the 20th century, Canadians had every reason to be optimistic. Saskatchewan and Alberta became Canada’s eighth and ninth provinces, an estimated 1.8 million immigrants filled the frontiers, silver was discovered in Cobalt, Ontario, and value of manufacturing tripled replacing agriculture as the leading economic sector. It was into this promising milieu that in 1907 the first Canadian office of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) opened in Montréal, Quebec, Canada with only two people on staff.
From that modest beginning, PwC is now celebrating its 100th year anniversary and has grown to become a national organization with over 5,200 partners and staff in 25 locations across Canada. As well, PwC Canada is an integral part of the world’s largest professional services firm, which in total incorporates more than 140,000 people in 149 countries. The story of the Canadian firm is now told in a commemorative book entitled “100 Years of Excellence”.
“There are but few organizations that have celebrated 100 years in business,” says Chris Clark, PwC Chief Executive Officer. “It is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our partners and staff across the country and all those who came before them. Since 1907, PwC has grown with the country providing our clients with service excellence and giving back to the communities in which we live and work.”
Over the past 100 years PwC alumni have held military positions and served their country through several wars, been Olympic athletes, high-ranking government officials and some have gone on to lead some of the largest companies in Canada.
“The firm and its people have been instrumental in many regulatory and public policy changes and have played leading roles in advocating for improvements in many aspects of the accounting profession,” says Kevin Dancey, CEO of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and a former CEO of PwC. “Congratulations to PwC on 100 years.”
