11 August 2004 - PricewaterhouseCoopers today announced it has been appointed as the official professional services advisory firm for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Corporation which will be held from 15-26 March 2006.
In the lead-up and during the Games, around 100 PricewaterhouseCoopers partners and employees will work alongside the Melbourne 2006 team to provide assurance and professional advisory services, which includes handling issues such as risk management strategies, financial management, and taxation including GST.
Melbourne Managing Partner for PricewaterhouseCoopers Andrew Hagger said the values behind the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games were a great fit for the firm's values of teamwork, excellence and leadership.
“The high performance focus required to be an elite athlete and the high performance professionalism required to run such an event are what inspired PricewaterhouseCoopers to become part of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games”, Mr Hagger said.
“PricewaterhouseCoopers also values its role within the Melbourne community and is excited to be playing such a key part in working with the Melbourne 2006 team to ensure the success of the Games.”
“I think Edwin Flack, if he were still alive, would be especially pleased with our involvement”. Flack was working with the firm in London at the time that he successfully represented Australia in winning two athletics gold medals at the 1896 Athens Olympics; upon returning to Melbourne, Flack went on to establish the firm in Australia.
Chairman of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Corporation, Ronald J Walker, said the appointment of PricewaterhouseCoopers was another positive step forward in the preparation for the Games.
“Clearly, PricewaterhouseCoopers is a highly regarded firm in Melbourne and throughout the world, and I very much welcome their appointment. They have first class experience in major projects and events, with specialists in key advisory areas such as risk management, financial management and taxation. That level of expertise will help fulfil our vision that these Commonwealth Games will be the greatest ever.”
More than 4,500 athletes will compete in 16 sports and 24 disciplines - 14 of the 16 sports will be staged at some of the world's greatest sporting venues within a three-kilometre radius of Melbourne's CBD.
