Hagar International: Vulnerable women and children: Cambodia

The Ulysses team in Cambodia provided professional and commercial support for Hagar’s board and management, by conducting a comprehensive review of Hagar Design Ltd. that included an assessment of their current operations, a review of strategic options, and the development of a strategic plan.

Ulysses 2007
Save the Children: Child protection: China

The team’s role was to review the efficiency and effectiveness of the current activities in the Livelihoods component of the Fuyang Community-based Model for Children Affected by HIV/AIDS and to make recommendations about the future development of this component. The team was also asked to conduct an in-depth analysis of two of Save the Children’s NGO partners as to the sustainability of their business models and the possibility for replication of their work.

Save the Children: Basic education: China

The PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) team provided support to the Yunnan Minority Basic Education Project (YMBEP) which was formed by Save the Children in collaboration with the local government. The team was asked to review the income generation element of the YMBEP which helps provide scholarships to poor children to allow them to access and continue basic education. In response to this the team made recommendations and helped develop models and methodologies for the appraisal of income generation projects.

Gram Vikas: Water and sanitation: India

The Ulysses team assisted Gram Vikas develop a plan to expand its programmes through collaboration with other organisations in states outside Orissa. The team expanded the work undertaken with the 2005 Ulysses Programme and the small pilot programmes Gram Vikas already had underway.

Aravind: Eye care: India

Aravind Eye Care is the world’s largest provider of eye care services performing 250,000 surgeries per year. However, the long term aim of the organisation is to perform one million surgeries per annum by 2015. To help them achieve this goal, PwC was asked to design a strategic road map for the organisation to form partnerships with other eye care organisations in the needy regions of India. Implicit in this task was the creation of marketing strategies for identifying partners and the development of monitoring processes to evaluate any new operations.

Gram Vikas: Rural development: India

In eight weeks, the PwC Ulysses India team developed a strategic business plan to enable this NGO to reach out and empower hundreds of thousands of impoverished individuals by applying strategic networking concepts.

World Links: Education and information technology: India

The PwC team served as the core facilitator of the strategic planning process in India, with the main priority being the design of a structure and framework for World Links India’s three-year regional strategic plan based on discussions with the stakeholders.


Ulysses 2001
CHILDLINE: India

CHILDLINE is a project of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and is a partnership of all government organisations and non-government organisations (NGOs) in India working towards protecting the rights of children. The PwC team was asked to conduct a study concerning the feasibility of an accreditation body or performance rating body for NGOs in India, and the identification of a possible framework for a future rating and/or evaluation system. The team was also asked to conduct a study of the difference in accounting principles between Indian NGO accounting practices and International Accounting Standards (IAS), and to provide recommendations on how to amend the Indian NGO Accounting Practice to bring it in line with IAS.

Sunlabob: Rural electrification: Laos

Sunlabob Ltd. provides affordable and reliable energy solutions with renewable energy sources to remote and isolated villages that will not benefit from large scale energy distribution systems in the country. The team’s assignment was to assist Sunlabob to develop a structure and process for the expansion of the hybrid village grid project to up to 30-40 locations. This includes strengthening the financial management system, developing monitoring and evaluation processes and exploring the possibilities for further public-private partnerships.
