Jim Owens is Chairman & CEO of Caterpillar Inc., which, according to its official Web site, is "the world's largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, and industrial gas turbines." With a masters and a doctorate from North Carolina State University, Mr. Owens knows his way around both heavy equipment engineering and the wider world of business.
In this interview he offers his unique point of view on topics as diverse as globalisation, government regulation, and the never-ending hunt for talent. Mr. Owens is also unique in that he takes an extremely proactive stance concerning the environment and climate change. For instance, he says "we’ve started to release our sustainability report annually with our annual report, staking out the goals that we’ve set for eco-efficiency of our plants, the energy-water efficiency, and how we use those to deliver our products and services."
