Lev Khasis is CEO, Chairman of the Management Board, X5 Retail Group N.V.

For Lev Khasis, CEO and Chairman of the Management Board of Russia's X5 Retail Group N.V., the issues he faces on a daily basis—growing government regulation, how to best leverage business networks to meet consumer demands, the consequences on global climate change—are well-known to CEOs the world over.

However, Mr. Khasis—who graduated from the University of the Ministry of the Interior with a PhD in technical sciences and law—is convinced that, in certain instances, businesses Russia face major problems; case in point: the shortage of professional talent. He is blunt: "The situation with the labour force is beyond bad, it is disastrous. And it is so because there is no educational system in Russia to prepare students for our industry. Not a single university trains specialists for our industry. . . . That's why companies end up pirating staff from each other".
