US retailer overview
Automotive retailers posted a 13.1% return for the quarter. Retailers have enjoyed one-year and three-year returns of 34.3% and 42.6%, respectively.
Global automotive retailers index posted fourth quarter and one-year losses of -13.5% and -33.5%, respectively. The sector also posted a loss of -7.3% over the past three-years. The one-year and fourth quarter losses for the sector have been attributed to the housing slow down and subprime lending problems faced in the U.S. In addition, historically high gas prices have suppressed sales of high margin light trucks and SUVs. No retailers in the index posted positive returns during 2007.
