Stephen D. King

Stephen King is HSBC’s group chief economist and the Bank’s global head of economics and asset allocation research. He is directly responsible for HSBC’s global economic coverage and co-ordinates the research of HSBC economists all over the world.

Stephen joined HSBC in 1988. From 1990 through to 1993, he was responsible for HSBC’s views on the Japanese economy. From 1993 through to 1998, he was responsible for the bank’s views on Europe. He became the bank’s chief economist in 1998. He has been consistently highly ranked in the various investor surveys.

Stephen has written on a wide variety of economic topics: recent examples include a report on China’s role in the world economy, an analysis of global inflation pressures and a study of external imbalances.

Since 2001, Stephen has been writing a weekly column for “The Independent”, one of the UK’s leading newspapers. He appears regularly on both television and radio. He has given written and oral evidence on the economic effects of globalisation to the House of Commons Treasury and Civil Service Committee and the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee. He has also given oral evidence to the House of Lords Committee on UK monetary policy.

Stephen’s career began at H.M.Treasury, where he was an economic adviser within the civil service.

Stephen studied economics and philosophy at Oxford.


Craig Campbell

Craig Campbell is a senior practitioner in PricewaterhouseCoopers global forest, paper and packaging Industry practice and leads the Performance Improvement practice, based in Vancouver, Canada. Mr. Campbell is responsible for Canadian, North American and global benchmarking studies. He is an expert on strategic trends in the global forest and paper industry. He is a frequent speaker and author, and is called upon regularly by the media for his views on the trends and transactions shaping the industry.

Mr. Campbell has extensive experience in the forest and paper sector, particularly in technology, benchmarking surveys, merger integration and cost comparisons. He was the chair of one of the four ISO working groups developing international environmental standards, which involved the coordination of the many different views expressed by participating ISO 14000 members world-wide. He also was a member of the Canadian Advisory Committee to the ISO/TC 206 working group on sustainable forest management.

From 1996 to 1999, he was based in Montreal, where Mr. Campbell established PricewaterhouseCoopers' Eastern North American forest and paper practice. He is a Chartered Accountant and a graduate of the University of British Columbia (Bachelor of Commerce).


Mark Connelly

Mark Connelly, a managing director at Credit Suisse, is head of basic materials research in North America, Head of the Global paper & forest products research team, and has primary research responsibility for paper and forest products, and major chemicals in North America. He joined Credit Suisse in 2000. Previously, he spent 13 years with JP Morgan securities, first in banking and M&A, and then in high yield research and equities (which include paper and packaging).

Prior to his Wall Street experience, Mr. Connelly was a consultant at Peterson Consulting, where he focused on asbestos litigation. Connelly is a former President of the New York Paper & Forest Products Analyst Group. He has been named an All-Star Analyst in the Wall Street Journal polls several times. He is currently ranked #2 in the Institutional Investor All-American Research Poll, and has been ranked #1 or #2 for the past five years.

Mr. Connelly received his MBA from New York University.

Michael Vermette is a Partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers’ advisory services practice, and a Senior Vice President of PricewaterhouseCoopers Inc., the Firm’s corporate restructuring practice based in our Vancouver office. Mike joined the firm in 1985.

Mike is responsible for the firm’s Corporate Advisory & Restructuring (“CAR”) practice in Vancouver and is the national leader of the CAR Forestry practice. He has over 18 years of public practice experience in the areas of financial restructurings, business turnaround, corporate finance, and forensic investigations. These assignments have been completed on behalf of financial institutions, company management and various levels of government in respect of companies in a wide range of industries with particular focus on the Forest Products Sector.

Mike is also past President of the British Columbia Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals, a current member of its Board of Directors, and a member of the Turnaround Management Association.

Mike earned his Bachelor of Commerce at Carleton University in 1985 and obtained his Chartered Accountant designation in 1987. He is also a Chartered Insolvency and Restructuring Professional and a Trustee in Bankruptcy.
