The Slovak Republic has undergone a process of harmonization to bring its energy sector standards in line with those of the EU. The Slovak Republic is also seeing a gradual decrease in its dependence on solid fuels as a primary energy source. A new energy regulatory authority began operating in 2001, and is responsible for setting energy prices and establishing the framework for third party access to the electrical grid.
