Brídín Smith, Tax and Legal Services

Having a business and legal background, a career in tax seemed like a natural choice. PwC offered the best opportunity for me and five years on I can confidently say that I chose the correct path. There are people from all sorts of backgrounds and disciplines in TLS which makes for an interesting work environment.

Quality training every step of the way
I’ve had extensive training from the very start. There’s a thorough induction programme for the first year which gives you a really good foundation and that initial start has helped me ever since. As my career progresses, my training has moved to another level and I’ve had the opportunity to complete more technical and industry related courses. This has meant that I’ve been able to travel abroad and gain awareness of international tax jurisdictions.

As a Manager I have a wide portfolio of clients, consequently the work ranges from tax structuring and planning to mergers and acquisitions. It’s mergers & acquisitions that I find most challenging, but also the most exciting. This work involves identifying the tax issues which will have an impact upon a potential investment decision and implementing the most efficient tax structure.

A great opportunity in the US
The highlight for me has to be my four-month secondment to our New York office. I found living and working there an amazing experience not to be missed! I worked as part of the Irish tax desk within the European Tax Group. Our job was to advise US corporations on the tax issues of investing in Ireland. It was an interesting role as it enabled me to look at my work from a different perspective. It also involved marketing elements so was a diverse new experience and of course it meant that I was able to develop my network within the global firm. I found the whole experience extremely beneficial and rewarding and as there were others there for short periods we enjoyed it all the more.

Although I’ve been here over five years, the time has flown by. Every day brings a different challenge. The career path is structured and achievable with outstanding support networks and resources. In PwC there is great team spirit and thankfully it’s not all work, there is a year round social calendar to enjoy also.
