Aspire 2008

Our Summer Intern programme is a great way to spend a summer. You’ll be investing in your future while also having fun and being paid. Indy Senna is a Senior Manager in our Financial Assurance team, but once upon a time he was a Summer Intern himself. Now, Indy has responsibility for the entire Financial Assurance area Summer Intern programme in Auckland, so here he tells you a little about the programme and what to expect.

“Having been a part of PwC's first ever Summer Intern programme, it’s incredibly rewarding to find myself the driver of the Financial Assurance Summer Intern programme in Auckland.

Some of you are probably thinking ‘why a summer at PwC instead of a summer at the beach?’ Well, the advantages of the SI program are very clear; first and foremost you’ll gain an insight into your future job, and into PwC. The 'real world' is very different to uni life and it’s surprising the number of people who find they really enjoy working life!

The training and experience you’ll get as a Summer Intern at PwC is simply excellent. Its exactly the same training you'd get as a graduate, therefore, when you join PwC as a graduate you're already a step ahead.

Training is a huge part of the programme, and it continues to be throughout your career here. We want it to be a balance of practical and theoretical, and we want it to be fun. To that extent we have training off-site, where there's various team building exercises and all the Summer Interns really get to know each other. Of all the training programmes I've been involved with this is undoubtedly one of the best, most memorable and most fun.

Now trust me when I say this. When you start at PwC no one will ask you to make coffee or get you to photocopy things all day. The work you’ll do as a Summer Intern is the same as a new graduate at PwC. You will be talking to Company Accountants and CFOs as soon as you start to work with clients.

We also have some great Summer Intern initiatives, such as shadowing, where you get to shadow a Senior Manager or Partner for a day. Since you get to attend all the meeting, lunches etc. for that day, it gives you an amazing insight into what Partners and Managers do. We've had great feedback from Summer Interns about this unique initiative.

To me, the best thing about the Summer Intern programme is that, by the end of your summer, you'll find you’re working with friends, not just colleagues. This is something we really enjoy seeing happen every year, and to us it means the programme is a success”.

What they did last summer…
