Equipping students with essential skills
In support of the Johannesburg Government's Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA), PwC South Africa has partnered with Hewlett Packard to launch an eSchool initiative.
The initiative aims to improve information and communications technology (ICT) literacy in Africa by helping youth complete grade 12 with skills to effectively participate in an ICT-savvy society.
The eSchool initiative's main driver is the eAfrica Commission of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). This special task team is overseeing the structured development of the ICT sector on the continent.
PwC's eSchool initiative was first launched at Silver Oaks located in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, with 1600 students and 45 teachers.
Project deliverables and successes at the school include:
- refurbishing the laboratory
- equipping the school with necessary infrastructure and ICT equipment
- training and exposing teachers to appropriate digital content and the ways in which it plays a role in enhancing education.
Fundamentally, students will be trained with the ICT skills needed to keep pace in the growing economy.
It is envisaged that this initiative will also contribute to poverty alleviation in the province through improving the employability of previously disadvantaged individuals.
"Teachers now feel empowered and they know that the computers will be a very effective tool to promote the culture of teaching in e-learning in our school. Thank you, PwC for making this possible." ……..Mrs. Suzane Jones (Deputy Principal).
