Success stories: The Netherlands

“From the 7,200 primary schools in the Netherlands and at this moment fifteen per cent have joined this project.”

Kids moving the world

Creating awareness of hunger: that’s the mission of PwC Netherlands’ Kids Moving the World.

The initiative supports the World Food Program of the United Nations – particularly the School Food Program – which ensures children can attend school and be nourished in the process.

The specially developed teaching material for this project is offered free to primary schools throughout the Netherlands. Included in the kit is a game which simulates life in developing countries. The children learn by playing, and a PwC volunteer Game Guide helps them further understand what hunger means and how it can be solved.

The teaching kit also consists of a story, pictures and assignments to help children appreciate the stark contrast to their own lives. Schools can choose from different modules: Cambodia, Nicaragua, Tanzania and Malawi.

The children’s enthusiasm is largely due to the Game Guides. The PwC representative helps the class explore the selected country and work together to find ways of improving living conditions in the local villages.

Though the programme started with plans for only 40 Game Guides, the response among PwC staff was so overwhelming that we quickly raised our targets. There are so many candidate Game Guides that we don’t have enough schools – colleagues are now being sent out as ambassadors to find additional participants.
