Seeing the world in a different way
In October 2006, senior manager in PwC Hong Kong Christina Ho participated in a ‘Sight saving field tour – from city to rural areas’ for ORBIS. ORBIS is a non-profit humanitarian organisation that prevents and treats blindness in developing countries. It believes that 75% of the world’s blindness is preventable and that prevention through education and training is more important than treatment alone.
Christina participated in a six-day trip to Changsa at Wunan and Guizhou, which involved working with ORBIS’s Flying Eye Hospital, carrying out free sight tests with the help of the local doctors, visiting homes of Guizhou patients to understand their lives and needs; and raising funds for a new sight-saving project in Guizhou after the trip.
“Corporate responsibility is extremely important in today’s world,” said Christina. “Because we have access to so many different resources here at PwC, I think we can do a lot to help the communities we serve…In Guizhou, we helped examine hundreds of villagers’ sight. Some of the patients received treatment immediately after the test from local doctors.”
