Gender Advisory Council: Robert Swaak

I have always had a strong interest in the people agenda and diversity in particular. I believe it is key to our business – diversity is what our clients expect and what ensures our advice is so relevant and rich. As human capital partner for the Dutch firm and as a member of the human capital team for continental Europe, I have been fortunate enough to be in the position to help bring this issue to the forefront. It is something in which we are investing significant resources on a local and regional level. Diversity is not just a matter for human resources – it needs to be anchored into our every day practices.

Communicating your ambitions

My advice to women would be, first and foremost, to communicate your intentions and ambitions early on and seek the discussion; don’t hold back, however difficult it may seem. I am convinced that, today in this organisation, there is always somebody who understands and who is willing to commit him or herself to helping you realise your ambitions.

Robert Swaak joined the Dutch firm in 1988 as a trainee auditor and became a partner in 1998. He works in the assurance practice and services predominantly Dutch listed clients with major international operations in the telecommunications sector. He has been on the management board of PwC Netherlands since 2006, as chief finance officer, chief operating officer and human capital leader. Robert is also a member of the Eurofirms’ executive operations and human capital teams, and joined the Gender Advisory Council in the autumn of 2007.
