This publication considers the accounting and the practical implications that arise from the guidance in IFRIC 13 on the telecoms industry.

IFRS 8 requires that companies implement a ‘management approach’ to reporting the financial performance of their operating segments. As telecommunications companies adopt the new IFRS 8, they may face challenges in defining and reporting segmental information. 12th Annual Global CEO Survey: Redefining success
CEOs around the world are retrenching, indeed many claim to be entering ‘survival mode.’ Our 12th Annual Global CEO survey shows how the financial crisis shattered short-term confidence. The percentage of CEOs who were ‘very confident’ about their one-year revenue growth prospects dropped to 21%, the lowest level in six years. Uncertainty about the future is still running high and confidence no doubt continued to deteriorate after we completed the survey in early December.

Redefining success, the PricewaterhouseCoopers 12th Annual Global CEO Survey, explores how CEOs are reconsidering the fundamentals of business in response to extreme operating conditions and assuming responsibility for issues that were once considered outside the scope of industry. We interviewed 1,124 CEOs around the world between early September to early December, 2008. Here, we look specifically at what the 107 CEOs in the technology, communications, and entertainment & media industry think, and how they are dealing with a combination of challenges, never experienced before.

Making sense of a complex world: Accounting for handsets and subscriber acquisition costs
The range of service offerings from mobile operators has continued to grow in recent years and there is now a wide variety of commercial models in place across many different market places. There is no prescriptive guidance within International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) on accounting for handsets or for subscriber acquisition costs, and practice is divergent. As the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) has confirmed that it will not be taking this topic on to its agenda, we feel that the time is right for a principles-based framework to help you in your analysis of how to account for these increasingly complex transactions.
