Canadian business perspectives on the governance of enterprise IT

Large scale IT projects planned by Canadian organizations will require significant business-IT interaction where IT governance mechanisms will be critical. PwC conducted research for the 4th edition of the IT Governance Institute’s (ITGI) Global Status Report on the Governance of Enterprise IT.

The ITGI report showed a significant level of agreement among the business leaders from various countries, industries and enterprises on the contribution of IT to business success, and provided insight on the challenges and opportunities connected with IT, the impact of the economic crisis, and views on IT outsourcing, social networking and the cloud.

PwC conducted further analysis on the perceptions of the Canadian business community and found that Canadian organizations need to focus on two areas of IT governance:

• Enterprise architecture (EA): Efficient governance of EA can ensure greater IT flexibility and agility, enabling more rapid business change.
• Cost reduction: Using the right governance mechanisms can play a significant role in cost reduction initiatives e.g. driving re-use, eliminating duplication between initiatives and optimizing investment evaluation.
