PricewaterhouseCoopers Canada Foundation: aligning your values with volunteer opportunities
At PricewaterhouseCoopers, we take a different approach to volunteerism than many other employers. We don’t simply identify charities we think are important to our firm and then suggest that people go and volunteer for them during their off hours. Instead, we provide avenues for you to connect with not-for-profit organizations that share similar values and concerns as you do, and to leverage the same leadership skills you show in the workplace to bring meaningful change in your community. This is what the PricewaterhouseCoopers Canada Foundation is all about.
Team Volunteering
Our Team Volunteering program engages teams of six to ten PwC people in meaningful day-long projects with charities across Canada. Not only do you get to choose from a range of charities to volunteer with, what’s more, we offer a paid day away from the office to volunteer. Over the past year, 2,400 of our people have participated in this program. Our volunteer teams got involved in activities that included helping to feed more than 300 hungry people, creating12,500 kits for children in hospitals and planting 2,000 trees.
Volunteer Grants
The Volunteer Grants Program acknowledges our people's volunteer efforts and provides direct financial assistance to the organizations they support. These grants are available to a staff member or partner who volunteers 50 hours per year with up to two charities or community sports organizations of their choice. In FY09, PwC donated $78,000 through 262 grants to acknowledge the outstanding volunteer efforts of our people.
Volunteer Recognition
The Volunteer Recognition Program acknowledges and celebrates the extraordinary volunteer efforts of our people who make their communities better places to live and work. Recipients are selected based on their volunteer contribution to a non-profit organization, their impact on the greater community, and their demonstration of our firm's core values of excellence, teamwork and leadership.
Leadership Grants
Our experience with charitable organizations has shown us that professional development is acutely underfunded in the not-for-profit sector. In response, our Foundation offers Leadership Grants, a program that supports the development of existing and emerging Canadian charity leaders.
Volunteer Education and Engagement
To educate our people, the Foundation has created tools and workshops highlighting the needs that exist in our communities and the organizations that are searching for volunteers. Staff and partners can access these resources online or by attending live sessions. An example of one of the workshops offered is Board Basics, which arms new and aspiring directors with the key information, skills and confidence they require to join a non-profit board or committee. Since launching this workshop in 2007, more than 300 partners and staff of all levels have participated. Many of them have joined boards as a result of the session.
