Going Green

PwC empowers our people to reduce their environmental footprint at work and at home

Climate change and environmental issues affect all of us. In June 2007, we embarked on our three-year Environmental Action Plan (EAP), which forms the basis for our actions relating to the environment. The EAP initially focused on assessing the environmental impact of our operations, a carbon inventory, and establishing our local Environmental Committees. As we enter year three, we are continuing to move ahead with existing and new initiatives, and leveraging the excellent work of our local committees.

Below is an overview of our recent accomplishments as well as our ongoing actions relating to the environment. The continuing success of the EAP depends not only on what we do as a firm but perhaps more importantly, our individual actions.

Reduction of paper usage: We have implemented initiatives to reduce our paper consumption by installing 117 new copier units that print double-sided and no longer print default cover sheets. We are also using 30% recycled office paper for printing and copying.

Green event guidelines: We have developed Green Event Guidelines to assist in organizing environmentally friendly PwC events.

PwC’s Environmental Committees: Today, nearly 100 people volunteer their time on our local committees, which are working to reduce the firm’s environmental footprint by organizing events both during our firm’s annual Green Week and throughout the year. Sample projects include monthly environmental newsletters, lunch n’ learns, local battery recycling programs, and testing low-waste coffee machines.

Earth Hour: PwC participates in Earth Hour, a global event designed to raise awareness about climate change. In 2009 our firm’s participation rate was 92% of our total office space switching off lights - up from 75% last year.
