The 2012 Banff Venture Forum (BVF) took place in Banff, Alberta, on October 4 and 5, celebrating its 14th year. PwC was pleased to act as title sponsor for the fourth consecutive year, and to support the entrepreneurial spirit so ingrained in both the technology and start-up arenas.
PwC and BVF were proud to welcome Eric Jackson, Forbes Tech Evangelist and founder of Ironfire Capital LLC—a technology-focused investment firm—as the 2012 keynote speaker. PwC was also pleased to present the closing remarks on Friday, October 5, and recognize the 2012 recipients of the Best Company Presentation awards.
Chris Dulny, National Technology Leader, attended the two-day event and introduced four sessions, including the Gala Dinner on Oct. 5 where he made closing remarks. “Every day we see remarkable advances in technology that change the way we live, work, play and interact with one another,” Dulny said. “The more than 40 presenting companies and start-ups in attendance at the 2012 Banff Venture Forum were amongst the most innovative leading that change.”
Calgary’s Orpyx Medical Technologies Inc. took home the award for Best Early Stage Company, with iKingdom Corp. (d.b.a. iConnectivity)—also of Calgary—winning in the Information Technology category. Solegear Bioplastics Inc. out of Vancouver, British Columbia, was awarded Best Presenting Company in the Life Sciences category, while Impakt Protective Inc. of Kanata, Ontario, won in the Life Sciences category.
“Again this year, it was even more apparent that we will continue to see an increase in attention and enthusiasm for emerging technology in North America and globally,” said Joon Chan, Partner, Audit and Assurance, who also attended, introducing a number of events, including the Information Technology Stream on Thursday, October 4. “In Alberta, we’re ideally-situated to not only witness this exciting, continued trend, but to also take a vested interest in this ever-evolving and rapidly growing landscape. Some have even suggested that Alberta has the potential to become the ‘Silicon Valley of the energy industry’ in the decades to come, and that’s an exciting prospect.”
PwC congratulates each of the winners and presenting companies who took part in this year’s Forum and anticipate great things to come going forward. Many memorable points of view were shared throughout the event, highlighting the undeniable opportunity this province has to drive successful, sustainable innovation.
