PwC recognized as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers in 2012

TORONTO, ON, April 20, 2012—PwC was selected by Mediacorp Canada Inc. as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers in 2012.  This follows PwC’s most recent recognition as one of Canada’s Best Employers for New Canadians for 2012 and Canada’s Top 100 Employers for 2012, which represents the eighth consecutive year PwC has been selected for this prestigious award.

“Embedding good environmental practices into all of the firm’s operations is an essential component of our corporate responsibility initiatives,” says James Temple, Director of Corporate Responsibility, PwC, and Leader of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Canada Foundation. “At the core of our environmental programs is a network made up of 14 local environmental committees across 22 offices in Canada. This is entirely volunteer driven by our employees.”

Mr. Temple adds, “We’re extremely proud of this accomplishment. Our environmental committees help raise awareness about the important environmental issues at both local and national levels, as well as working tirelessly to inspire colleagues to become more environmentally and socially conscious.”

Some of the firm programs and initiatives that help identify PwC as one of this year’s Canada’s Greenest Employers include:  

• The new PwC Tower at 18 York Street in Toronto was constructed with a commitment to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification. Some of the sustainable features of the building include a green roof and an urban forest. The tower consumers 30% less energy through high-efficiency heating, under-floor air supply chilled water thermal storage and intelligent lighting.
• In July 2008, PwC undertook a major energy efficiency initiative to green its IT and computer systems, such as virtualizing more than 250 servers in its data centres. The firm continues to see the benefits of the project as related to its emissions reduction plan.
• For the past five years, PwC has celebrated Green Week, an initiative that takes place in offices across Canada promoting environmental awareness and encouraging sustainability practices both in and outside of the workplace.  Also, in 2011, more than 100 committee volunteers invested more than 550 hours of volunteer community work.
•  In the last fiscal year, PwC increased the use of recycled paper throughout the firm and PwC saw a reduction of paper usage by 11% or 7,433 thousands of sheets.

Now entering its fifth year, the Canada’s Greenest Employers competition is organized by the editors of the Canada's Top 100 Employers project. This special designation recognizes the employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness in their organizations. These employers have developed exceptional earth-friendly initiatives -- and are attracting people to their organizations because of their environmental leadership.
