Global Forest and Paper Industry: Net Earnings Summary — Three months ended June 30, 2009

This net earnings summary provides a regional comparative analysis of the international forest and paper sector's financial performance for the three-month period ending June 30, 2009.

Unlike the United States, Japan and competing emerging markets, Canada's forest and paper industry sustained larger losses during the second quarter of 2009 compared to the same period in 2008. Weak commodity product pricing and low demand characterized the quarter while attempts to cut costs created only sporadic demand. Overall, Canada's forest and paper sector reported losses of $660 million this quarter, an increase from the $462 million in losses incurred during the same period last year.

Ten of the largest public forest and paper companies in the US posted earnings of US$839 million this quarter thanks to a $1-billion boost from alternative fuel tax credits. Europe's 10 largest forest and paper businesses incurred a loss of €412 million, reversing profit of €459 million one year ago.

Eastern Canadian companies' losses more than doubled to $166 million in this quarter compared to $77 million last year. Cascades was the only company of the five largest public forest companies in the region that reported positive earnings in the quarter.
