The 26th annual PwC Global Forest & Paper Industry Conference was held in Vancouver, Canada on May 9, 2013. With the theme, Growing the future: Global strategies for sustainable success, the conference brought together 400 CEOs, senior executives, customers, suppliers, financial analysts, government representatives and other stakeholders. Through a series of presentations and discussions, conference speakers and panellists examined a wide range of factors affecting the forest and paper industry today. Discussions touched almost every segment of the industry ranging from the global forces that shape the world economy today, the financial performance of the industry, emerging technology and products, sustainable development and forest conservation.
The PwC Conference was part of the week-long Global Forest Products Leadership Summit 2013, a five day series of events and conferences focused on the global pulp, paper, wood products and fibre-based packaging industries. Kevin Bromley is an audit partner with over 25 years experience. He currently leads PwC’s Canadian Forest, Paper and Packaging audit practice and deals extensively with multi-location, multi-national companies. Kevin has demonstrated strong technical accounting and audit skills with extensive experience with public filings and regulatory compliance primarily in the forestry and mining industries. He is very accessible and works proactively with senior management and audit committees to find collaborative solutions to complex accounting issues.

Elizabeth de Carvalhaes, who has extensive experience in negotiating with governments and international markets, was instated as the CEO and Executive President of the Brazilian Pulp and Paper Association (Bracelpa) on September 2007. In Brazil, her role is to negotiate public and industrial policies that drive the growth of companies and the expansion of the industry’s participation in global trade. Communicating the good practices of pulp and paper companies on national and international levels; strengthening the industry’s image; and debating issues related to this sector with government authorities and the National Congress, are among the main action strategies of her position.
As the Brazilian pulp and paper industry’s representative at the United Nations Organization’s Food and Agricultural Administration (FAO) and at the International Council of Forest & Paper Associations (ICFPA), Elizabeth faces a major challenge on the international scope: namely, to favourably position the industry’s planted forests in the negotiations of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), currently the biggest multilateral negotiation involving more than 200 countries in the search for a global climate policy.
Elizabeth began her professional career at Volkswagen Brazil. She also held the position of vice-president of the Associação Nacional de Fabricantes de Veículos Automotores (ANFAVEA), the Brazilian Automotive Industry Association.

As Managing Director, Kerry Cesareo leads WWF’s strategy and work related to conserving the world’s forests, with a focus on mitigating and reversing the impacts of forest products trade as a driver of biodiversity loss, particularly in WWF’s priority ecoregions.
In 2006, Kerry successfully launched the North American program of WWF’s Global Forest & Trade Network (GFTN), forging partnerships with P&G, Kimberly-Clark, Walmart, Williams-Sonoma, Inc., and others. The program provides technical assistance on achieving environmentally-responsible supply chains for wood and paper products, utilizing Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification as an important tool. She also managed project start-up for the Sustainable Forest Products Global Alliance, a public-private partnership with The Home Depot and USAID, and served as Operations Manager for GFTN.
Prior to joining WWF in 2001, Kerry conducted master’s research with Iisaak Forest Resources, Ltd., an FSC-certified, First Nations-controlled forestry company on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. She has also worked as an environmental scientist, forest inventory researcher, an AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteer, and a U.S. PIRG Field Manager.
Kerry earned a BS in Biology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and a master’s in environmental management from Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. She currently sits on the FSC-US Board of Directors.

Kevin J. Clarke has 30 years of innovation and transformational leadership experience. As President and Chief Executive Officer of Catalyst Paper he has institutionalized an operating philosophy that is reinvigorating the workforce as he steers the company toward its goal of being the preferred supplier of mechanical printing papers in North America and the Pacific Rim.
Prior to joining Catalyst Paper in June 2010, Kevin held executive roles with Worldcolor (Quebecor World) in the magazine, book and directory divisions over a 28-year career with the company. He was named President of Book and Directory Operations in 2004 and became the Group President of its Publishing Services Group in 2008, leading an integrated global organization of 7,500 employees at 20 manufacturing facilities that produced 1 billion books and 1,600 magazine titles.
He holds a bachelor of science from Niagara University and has served on a variety of community, economic development and industry boards throughout his career. Kevin’s track record in business restructuring, strategy and market development has led to numerous awards, including being named Printing Executive of the Year by the Printing and Imaging Association of New York State.

Donna Harman is president and chief executive officer of the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) and is recognized by industry leaders and policymakers alike as one of the leading experts on public policy concerning the pulp, paper, packaging and wood products manufacturing industry. She works with AF&PA members to advance policies that promote a strong and sustainable U.S. forest products industry, which employs more than 900,000, generates more than $50 billion in annual payroll, has total annual sales exceeding $190 billion, and comprises 5 percent of the nation’s manufacturing output, placing it on par with the automobile and plastics industries.
Prior to assuming her current role in May 2007, Donna served as senior vice president, policy and government affairs. Before joining AF&PA, Donna served in government affairs roles for Champion International Corporation and The Dow Chemical Company after working as a legislative assistant in Congress.
Donna is the current president of the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations and serves as chair of the National Association of Manufacturers’ Council of Manufacturing Associations. She is a member of the Corporate Advisory Council to the International Congressional Conservation Foundation and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s advisory group on Sustainable Forest Industries.
Born in Elkhart, Kansas, Donna earned a bachelor’s degree in public affairs from Anderson University and a law degree from American University’s Washington College of Law. She is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Association Committee of 100, and is on RISI’s Top 50 Power List for the pulp and paper industry.
Donna and her husband, John, have two daughters and live in Northern Virginia.

Stanley Hirsch was the founding manager of CBD Technologies, the predecessor company to FuturaGene in 1995. He has overseen the evolution of FuturaGene from a protein engineering company to a world leading company in the forest biotechnology field, with activities in Brazil, China, the United States and Israel, as well as partnerships in additional countries with major sustainable plantation forestry sectors. Prior to joining FuturaGene, Stanley was responsible for business development for a privately held group of healthcare companies, where he oversaw the structuring and managing of joint ventures, startup companies, technology licensing and new product acquisitions. Previously, he has also served as general manager of two diagnostics development companies.
Stanley has been involved in the development of automated systems for plant tissue culture and he is a co-inventor of patents in plant biotechnology and micropropagation systems.
Stanley did his undergraduate training in microbiology and biochemistry at the University of Cape Town and received his D. Phil. from Oxford University in cell biology and immunology.

Avrim Lazar was President & CEO of the Forest Products Association of Canada, from January 1, 2002 until April 1 2012 .
He was chair of the Advisory Committee on Paper and Wood Products (ACPWP) to the United Nations.
Avrim has held senior policy positions in the government of Canada in the Ministries of Justice, Agriculture, Environment and Human Resource Development. During this period he was responsible for national policy in areas as diverse as climate change, biodiversity, child poverty, employment insurance and labor force training.
Avrim was Chair of the Committee of the Whole of the Second UN Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1995. He also chaired the National Business Association Roundtable and is the Past-President of the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations (ICFPA).
Avrim taught high school in Vancouver and Zambia from 1969 to 1973. Over the years, Avrim has given many courses in the graduate studies programs at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University.
Avrim holds degrees in science and education, including a B.Sc (1968) from McGill University, a B.Ed (1970) and a PhEd in Ed (1976) from the University of Ottawa.

David Lindsay became the President and CEO of FPAC in September 2012. He was most recently a senior Deputy Minister in the Government of Ontario serving in the portfolios of Energy and Infrastructure, Northern Development, Mines and Forestry, Natural Resources, and Tourism and Culture. Before this, he served as President and CEO of the Association of Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology of Ontario. David was the founding President of the Ontario SuperBuild Corporation and the Ontario Jobs and Investment Board. He also served as Principal Secretary and Chief of Staff to the Premier of Ontario.
David is a Fellow of the Queen’s University School of Policy Studies and past Director of the Ireland Park Foundation, the Ontario Innovation Trust, the World Wildlife Fund, the Canadian Tourism Commission, the Public Policy Forum and the Empire Club of Canada.

Bruce McIntyre is a Partner and Leader of PwC’s Forest, Paper & Packaging practice in Canada. He joined PwC in 1986 following several years in resource management and planning positions with government and industry. He has conducted numerous business reviews and financial studies for industry and government; benchmarking surveys; implementation of management systems and sustainability programs.
Bruce obtained his B.S.F. degree from the University of British Columbia in 1977 and is a Registered Professional Forester. He completed his M.B.A. at Queen’s University in 1986 and qualified as a Certified Management Consultant in 1989. He is also a Certified Forester with the Society of American Foresters.

Ian Murdoch is a Director and Leader of PwC’s Forest, Paper & Packaging Practice in Austria and Germany. He is also a member of PwC’s Global Forest & Paper Industry Steering Group.
Ian started with Coopers & Lybrand in 1972 and has been working for PwC since 1985. He is a regular lecturer at international forest and paper industry seminars. Ian earned his Bachelors of Arts degree in Modern Languages (Russian and German) in 1972 and his Chartered Accountant degree in 1975, from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Jim Lopez was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer in January 2006 and has been a Director of the Corporation since January 2006. From 1999 to August 2003, Jim was Executive Vice President, Forest Resource Management Group of Tembec.
Jim also holds a seat on, and is chairman of the board of directors of the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) and is a co-chairman of the Bi-National Softwood Lumber Council between Canada and the United States. He is a member of the board of directors of FP Innovations and he sits on the President’s Board of Advisors for California University of Pennsylvania.

Peter began his career with Deutsche Bank and automotive company KTM. He joined the Mondi Group in 1992 as the head of internal audit of subsidiary Frantschach, later becoming corporate controller. After serving as chief executive of the bag and flexibles business from 1995 to 2001, overseeing its recovery and expansion, Peter was appointed chief executive of Mondi Packaging Europe in UK in 2002, leading its subsequent integration with Frantschach into the new Mondi packaging division in 2004. At the beginning of 2008 Peter joined the Mondi Boards as chief executive officer of the Group’s Europe & International Division, comprising all the former Mondi Packaging and Mondi Business Paper operations outside South Africa.
Peter serves as a non-executive director of Telekom Austria AG. He is Chairman of the Energy Committee of the Austrian Industry Association, Vice President of the Vienna Industry Association and President of respACT-austrian business council for sustainable development. He is member of the executive committee and board of CEPI.

Teresa Presas was born in 1952 in Portugal and has a degree in psychology from the Instituto de Psicologia Aplicada, Lisbon. From 1972 to 1974 she worked for the Consumer Research Department of Lintas International. She has worked as a journalist for the Semanario Expresso in Lisbon and has also worked on external & international relations at the Portuguese Film Institute.
Teresa entered into the paper industry in 1982 as Director of Communication and Marketing Services for Tetra Pak Portugal. She later went on to become Director of Communication and Environment for Tetra Pak Europe and then, Vice President of European Affairs for Tetra Pak Europe and Africa and Director of Corporate Environmental Affairs for Tetra Pak International.
Between 1991 and 2003 she was member of the Board and Executive Committee of various organisations including, ACE (the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment), ASSURE (Association for the Sustainable Use and Recovery of Resources in Europe) and EUROPEN (European Organisation for Packaging and the Environment). During that period she was vice-chairperson of the European Commission Consultative Forum for Environment and Sustainable Development.
Since 2007, Teresa has served as Chairman of the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations, Chairman Alliance for Competitive European Industries, Member of the EU Experts Advisory Group NMP – FP7 (Nanosciences-Nanotechnologies, Materials and New Production) and is a member of the High Level Group of the European Forest-based Sector Technology Platform. Teresa became Director General of CEPI in September 2003, on behalf of Steps Management sprl and holds a Honorary Doctorate at the Helsinki University of Technology.

Don Roberts is a Vice-Chairman of Wholesale Banking, and Managing Director in Investment Banking with CIBC World Markets Inc.. He leads the Bank’s Renewable Energy & Clean Technology Team, and also provides senior coverage for companies in the global forest products industry. In 2012, Don was chosen by Corporate Knights Magazine as the individual in the Financial Services sector who contributed the most to sustainable development in Canada.

David Scheible is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Graphic Packaging International, Inc. (NYSE:GPK) headquartered in Atlanta, GA with revenues of $4.3B. As chief economist, Craig leads a team of economists providing economic, fixed income and foreign exchange research to RBC clients. Craig is a regular contributor to a number of RBC publications and is a key player in delivering economic analysis to clients and the media through the Economics Department’s regular economic briefings.
A graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Toronto, Craig was appointed Chief Economist in 2001 having joined RBC 1994 after working at another financial institution for seven years. Craig is a participant in a number of the key RBC internal committees and is a member of the CD Howe Monetary Policy Council, Wilfrid Laurier School of Business and Economics Dean’s Advisory Council and the British Columbia Economic Forecast Council.
