The mining industry faces significant challenges when it comes to financial assurance requirements for mine closures. Increased environmental awareness, high government funding needs, and an often less-than-positive perception from the public are fuelling government demands for larger financial assurance amounts. If this trend does not abate, it could seriously impact the profitability of companies operating in the mining sector.

To address these concerns, PwC hosted an event on June 17, 2010 in Toronto. The panelists included John Gravelle, national Mining leader and partner, PwC; Michael Dobner, associate partner, PwC; Normand Champigny, formerly with PwC; and Dale Orr, president, Dale Orr Economic Insight and economic consultant, PwC.

Keeping up with changes in the mining industry

Canada's mining industry is considered to be internationally competitive and constantly adapting to changing times. With this constant fluctuation, there are also many changes to the accounting and tax environment within which the industry operates, such as the convergence to IFRS and the 2010 federal budget.

To address these issues, PwC hosted an event on March 30, 2010 in Toronto to discuss how IFRS and the 2010 federal budget will impact companies operating in the mining industry.
