Effective succession needs to start long before it’s put in place

Ian Gunn, Alberta Private Company Services leader, hosted a breakfast session and presentation on preparing to sell your business, in connection with Calgary Business Diversity. Stephen Kent, Managing Director of Consulting and Deals in the PwC Edmonton office, also shared his experience with participants. Kent talked about preparing for succession planning, common reasons for ownership transfer and mistakes to avoid. “Selling your business is a competitive process so it is important to remove all the reasons a buyer would ignore you; effective succession begins long before an actual exit”, stated Kent.

Other topics of the session included determining the best time to sell your business, establishing the value of your business, factors affecting value, strategy and process, buyers and financing the deal. Ian joined Stephen in discussing challenges and opportunities in addressing succession issues.
