More than 150 representatives from a variety of industries in the private business space joined PwC at the Fairmont Palliser in downtown Calgary for our annual Business Update for Private Companies. A week later, our Edmonton event saw more than 120 private business representatives at the Delta Edmonton South.
The half-day sessions covered a number of areas pertinent to private business, including Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE), information relating to not-for-profit organizations, Canadian and cross-border tax updates, and much more. In Edmonton, Scott McDonald, senior manager in the PwC Edmonton tax team, shared insights from the recently released Emerging Trends in Real Estate 2013, a joint publication between PwC and Urban Land Institute. Both events also featured an update on the results of the recent 2012 Business Insights Survey. Each year, the Business Insights Survey provides an in depth look into the business issues and concerns for Canadian private companies.
In addition, we were pleased to welcome Todd Hirsch, senior economist at ATB Financial, who provided a concise and accessible overview of the current economic condition, a topic he discusses at greater length in his recent book, The Boiling Frog Dilemma: Saving Canada from Economic Decline.
