Deputy Chief Financial Officer

Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) comprises King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH), Mid- Atlantic Wellness Institute (MWI) and the Lamb Foggo Urgent Care Centre.  BHB offers comprehensive diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitative services in response to Bermuda’s full spectrum of medical and mental health needs, serving Bermuda’s resident population of about 65,000, as well as many visitors who come to the island each year.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Deputy Chief Financial Officer (DCFO) will be responsible for all day to day activities within the finance function. The DCFO will provide leadership and support to the financial accounting, financial services and management accounting functions, ensuring that these teams provide high quality services, adhering to BHB operating standards. 

On behalf of the CFO, the DCFO will also direct the finance team in providing focused, analytical support for BHB, supervise financial reporting, maintaining the books of account and overseeing Revenue, Expenditure and Payroll functions.  The post-holder will also be responsible for producing accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with Canadian GAAP and for managing and coordinating the external audit process.  The DCFO will be expected to develop sounds accounting procedures and controls, to ensure the reliability of financial processes and budgetary control mechanisms, ensuring service delivery to optimal economy, efficiency and effectiveness, utilizing the most current methodologies.

Qualifications and experience

The Deputy Chief Financial Officer is a new positon within BHB and an important element of the Board’s succession planning strategy. 

The role will be ideally suited to a Bermudian, Spouse of Bermudian, or PRC holder from a range of industry sectors with the following experience and qualifications:

  • Bachelors’ degree in Finance, Business or equivalent; a Masters degree would be an asset;
  • A professional accounting qualification (CA, ACA, CPA, ACCA etc)  and a minimum of 8+ years’ demonstrable experience in a financial leadership role;
  • Financial experience gained within a healthcare organization, or equivalent public authority or utility would be desirable; however, candidates within demonstrable, transferable skills from the financial services, insurance, professional services etc sectors, will be actively encouraged;
  • A high level of accounting proficiency and working knowledge of costing techniques, financial analytical procedures and budgetary control;
  • Experience in financial systems development, data bases and reporting packages, in addition to a very high level of computer literacy;
  • Familiarity with operational, financial, quality assurance, and human resource procedures and regulations;
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to coach, develop and mentor other team members;
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high growth, rapidly changing, environment
  • Strong communication skills, both verbally and writing, capable of interacting effectively at all levels of the organization.
