Tax Freedom Day 2008

As we have done for the last two years, we have computed Belgium’s Tax Freedom Day for this year, i.e. the day from which each inhabitant in this country stops paying his or her taxes and starts working for him or herself.

Based on the latest data from the Federal Planning Agency, this date falls again, for the third year in a row, on 10 June. This means that, despite all the changes that were supposed to reduce taxes - such as personal tax reductions, the introduction of the notional interest deduction, VAT grouping, the various tax deductions for individuals and so on - the overall tax burden in Belgium has remained stable.

The fact that the overall tax burden has not been impacted negatively (given that the Tax Freedom Day for the third year in a row falls on the same day) proves that these measures have not negatively affected the country’s budget, despite all the talk and rumours to the contrary in the press.
